About Alfalit

Alfalit International, Inc., is a faith-based nonprofit organization founded in 1961 by Eulalia Cook, Justo and Luisa Gonzalez. Alfalit provides programs to the most needy of the world in literacy, basic education, preschool, health, nutrition, and community development in Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Africa, Portugal, and the United States. Alfalit reaches very poor and remote areas where other groups hesitate to go. Alfalit strives to provide high-quality, cost-effective education with compassion and respect for the people with whom we work.

Through our method of "Each One Teach One", our work is sustained in rural and urban area as one who learns to read and write is strongly encouraged to teach another.

Our Mission:

To eliminate human suffering that stems from illiteracy.

Our Vision:

The vision of Alfalit resides in the heart of every human being who yearns to improve himself or herself and longs for a better quality life, but has no opportunity to get it. Alfalit International believes that all people have a responsibility toward their neighbors, and that a strong chain of students who become teachers can result in sustainable development.

Our Students:

Over 780 million people are illiterate in the world, of which over 180 million are in Africa and over 40 million are in the Americas. This is almost 30 percent of the world's population that does not have access to education and therefore has little chance to achieve sustainable economic, social and cultural development.
