Alfalit has joined the Wájaro Foundation
in Colombia to work with the pastors in the local Wayuu community in
the semi-desert Guajira Peninsula straddling the Colombia-Venezuela
border. Our goal is to support the ASPEWA Association
and train 200 pastors and leaders from the Wayuu community as literacy
teachers. The literacy rate among the Wayuu is as low as 50%, compared
to the Colombian national average of over 94%.
In January 2018, 20 community leaders and pastors have completed their training and will start teaching Alfalit literacy programs in February and March. We are inspired by Pastor Isais Silva and Pastor Ricaute Henrique for leading the literacy initiative in their community. Pastor Henrique was once an Alfalit student, and to this day, continues to spread the light of literacy. Truly inspiring indeed!

Program Director, Juan Marcos Bello, visited the Guajira region and the prospective centers in January 2018. If you would like more information about our work with the Wájaro Foundation, please email juanmarcos@localhost.
