How Long?
Bible Reading: Psalm 6:1-7
When is an adverb of time, a word that indicates beginning and ending, completion.
“How long?” is the question the soul asks itself in impatience or in desperation.
The Psalmist proclaimed,
How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I bear pain in my soul, and have sorrow in my
heart all day long?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? (Psalm 13:1-2).
And God answers,
In a time of favor I have answered you,
on a day of salvation I have helped you;
I have kept you and given you… to establish the land,
to apportion the desolate heritages… (Isaiah 49:8).
“But, when?” exclaims the tortured soul, “When will be the ‘acceptable day’ when will be the ‘day of salvation’?”
And St Paul answers,
“At an acceptable time I have listened to you,
and on a day of salvation I have helped you .”
(2 Corinthians 6:2)
Prayer
My whole being, with my impatient “When?” I bring to you, Lord. lust as I am, I place myself in your hands. Thank you, my God, because you have made this hour the acceptable time for me, and you have made this day the day of my salvation! Sustain me in communion with you until the arrival of the other “when,” when my last hour on earth comes and I pass through the tunnel of time into eternity. Amen.
