A promising future and a different reality.

My children are proud of their mother and I can confidently say that I am a valuable and capable woman.

Daymi Perera

“One day, 16 years ago, I left Cuba with my young son of only 5 years old, looking for freedom and a better future. I came with my hands completely empty and a goal of many dreams to fulfill. When I arrived, like everyone else, I was faced with the harsh reality… I worked tirelessly cleaning offices and bathrooms, I worked as a waitress and a cashier at various restaurants, It didn’t matter the job; I always gave my best… I wanted to study English to find better opportunities, to be able to help my children with their homework… When I was told about the Alfalit program and saw the results with my own eyes… Thanks to Alfalit, I went from being a Bromeliad worker to a foliage process leader at Costa Farms where I support many workers who face some of the same struggles from my past. I am proud to lead them and show them that with effort and determination doors will continue to open… My suitcase of dreams is still not full, because I will continue to develop my passion for learning and continue growing like the very same seeds that I help cultivate at Costa Farms every day. Thank God, thanks Costa Farms for giving me so many opportunities, thank you Alfalit International and may God bless each and every one of you who help people like me fulfill their dreams. “

Knowledge and new opportunities, but above all confidence and ability

The Alfalit program has given me confidence in myself, happiness and a sense of tranquility in my life.

Maria Asicona Ijom

“I have to thank Alfalit International and Costa Farms for giving the opportunity to learn how to read, speak and write Spanish. In Guatemala I was not given the opportunity to learn, I was only taught a native dialect called Iche. My mother was a single mom and couldn’t afford to send us to school. The same occurred with me, the father of my children abandoned me and my 4 children and never helped us. When we arrived to the United States, my first job was working in Costa Farms. Our manager let us know that Costa Farms offered a program to learn to read and write Spanish, and so I started taking the classes. The Alfalit program has given me confidence in myself, happiness and a sense of tranquility in my life because I can now fill out work documents, I can read important papers that come to the house, something I never thought possible. My goal is to finish learning how to read and write Spanish well to be able to enter into the ACE program to learn English. It’s very important for me to learn English to be able to communicate with people in my community better.

I want to continue to develop and improve in my personal and professional life. I am very grateful for Alfalit and to all of those who have supported me throughout my journey. Thank You!”
