In 2017, Kelma Canazas Ayerbe became the Executive Director of Alfalit Vida Peru. Since her arrival, literacy programs have expanded, and the organization has received recognition from various partners, including the Ministry of Education’s Regional Directorate that lauded the development of teacher training.
A cornerstone of Alfalit is that education is the only tool that will lift families from poverty and ensure their civil and social rights, and Kelma shares this thinking. She believes she has a responsibility to help her neighbors, and joining the Alfalit team has enabled her to do so. As she witnesses the progress of students, she is inspired and admires their courage to learn. Kelma has long been committed to women’s empowerment and is appreciative of Alfalit’s efforts in this regard as well.
Kelma considers herself first and foremost a teacher. Her expertise, however, is also in the management of development projects and programs. In addition, she is exceptionally knowledgeable in monitoring and evaluation. Before joining the organization, Kelma was employed by the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations, World Visión International, and Aldeas Infantiles SOS [SOS Children’s Villages].
