Is All Time Equal?

Bible Reading:1 Samuel 2: 3-9  He will guard the feet of his faithful ones; but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness; for not by might does one prevail. —1 Samuel 2: 9

Is all time equal? Are all years always the same length? Or is one day always equal to another day?

Measured by the rotation and changing positions of the earth, or by the hands of the clock, all days appear to be equal. But measured by their relation to life, they are always different.

Some moments of light and life—like the instant of conversion— reach greater height, depth, and breadth than do countless years of obscure, oblivious existence.

There are minutes of darkness and death–like the moment of falling into the chasm of fatal temptation—that are gloomier than years of habitual, everyday existence.

The deeper and more dedicated are our love and our service, the more significant our days. As our devotion deepens, our hours are expanded and filled with blessings.

To live more fully is not to live more hours, but to fill those hours more richly.

Prayer

Lord, I want to fill my hours with goodness, fill them with service, fill them with life, fill them with hope, with faith and love. Fill them with you, Lord. Help me, O Christ, to fill my days to the brim, until I can say with St. Paul your apostle, “It is not I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” Amen.
